505 East Coast Championship

Fleet 13 posted a strong finish to wrap up the 2010 season at the East Coast Championship hosted by Hampton Yacht Club.

Craig Thompson and JB Turney teamed up for the event in Craig's USA 7346. The event got off to a good start with a win in the opening race of the series in light wind. The balance of the event was sailed in light, puffy, and shifty winds with some moderate breeze on the final day of the event. Good starts and conservative tactics allowed Craig/JB to spend the balance of the races in the top five of the fleet.

With no finish worse than 7th, we were able to extend from a tight pack in third through ninth position to finish second on 26 points over eight races with one throwout. Tyler Moore/Jesse Falsone sailed an impressive series and after the throwout counted only 1s and 2s to post 11 points for the series. Macy Nelson/Chris Brady rounded out the top three on 34 points.

Downwind tactics played a crucial role throughout this event with a lot of passes on the runs. There were several races where choosing when to run and when to reach proved decisive. Craig's newly rigged double-poles worked very well and this system makes the boat both easier and more fun to sail. Gybing the boat in any breeze is faster with this gear.

This concludes the scheduled racing for Fleet 13 for 2010. We plan to do some fall sailing before the weather turns for the worst. The winter will bring plenty of garage time as we work to prepare JB's new Rondar USA 9042 for the 2011 season.
